We have all heard the term "hippie". When you think about hippies most likely the ideas of free loving, drug using, and music festivals in the mid 60's like Woodstock come to mind. Well what about the influence of dress this subculture had on mainstream society and the influence of the movement even more so today in fashion?

Hippies, started as a youth movement in the United States in the mid-1960s. An influence that expanded across not only the United States but many other countries including England. This subculture adopted many of its ideologies from the Beat Generation, which included beatnik Jimi Hendrix. The beat generation was a literary movement in the 1950s and 60s, of anti-conformists youths.

This subculture of hippies, practiced alternative lifestyles outside of American commercialism which promoted sustainable energy, embraced the sexual revolution, created social groups and communities, listened to psychedelic music and used drugs such as marijuana and LSD to explore alternative states of consciousness. Their lifestyles included communal living, sharing of resources, and free love.
(Zoe and Lenny Kravitz)
The values and fashions of this subculture had and still do have a major impact on influencing popular music, television, film, literature, and the arts. Today, the "hippie" influence is still a big part of contemporary culture within fashion, lifestyle, music, sexual mores, and the cyberspace revolution. You can't be out in society without seeing its influence on a daily basis.
